Remember the days when everyone got new Easter outfits for Easter Sunday. We dressed in our best. Ladies wore hats and corsages and the men wore new suits with boutonnieres. Memories of by gone days are precious as we age. Easter was a time for family gatherings and Easter egg hunts. Good food, family and friends gathered around the table on Easter Sunday. Every family has their own traditions. These traditions are passed down from generation to generation. Those of us in the florist industry have seen many changes over the years.
Easter is no longer a big holiday. Gone are the days of corsages and boutonnieres for Easter Sunday. Although some families still gather around the dining room table on Easter Sunday, many do not. Easter flower centerpieces are no longer ordered for the special holiday. Easter lilies were once a must have, now they are sold in discount stores and grocery stores. From a florist's view point, Easter is barely a blip on the radar. Are we losing precious traditions and time spent with family? I hope not.
Our kids, now grown and on their own, always seem busy with their new independent lives. I miss the family gatherings when all the kids were home and gathered around the table. The loss of our Easter traditions began when my oldest son decided to join the army. He missed a lot of holidays while he was overseas. Iraq and Korea seemed so far away. The distance between us seemed overwhelming during the holidays. It is rare for all four of my boys to be home at the same time. I look forward to the over full house of kids and grand kids but it so seldom happens. On Easter Sunday I will get a call from the ones that can't come home and for a brief moment we will all be together.
